Synopsis

AI Future Makers (AIFM) Bootcamp 2026 is a talent development and innovation programme organised by the Penang Digitalisation–AI Conference & Expo (PDX), co-hosted by Agensi Pekerjaan CKM Sdn Bhd, and led by Ts. Lukas J. Tan, CEO of OPERiON Ecommerce & Software Sdn Bhd. Bringing together 98 young talents from 22 universities across Malaysia, the programme challenges participants to develop AI solutions addressing real-world human resource problems, including candidate screening, interviews, recruitment, employee retention and workforce development. Beyond technical knowledge, it emphasises creativity, courage, independent thinking and execution, empowering emerging talents to remain relevant, adaptable and competitive as AI transforms the workforce.

AI Future Makers is part of PENtastic Startup Month 2026, a wider entrepreneurship and innovation initiative led by Digital Penang, a Penang State Government-owned company focused on advancing the state's digital economy. Following the strong positive response to this year's competition, the AIFM organisers plan to expand the initiative to SMEs, entrepreneurs and innovators at the Penang Digitalisation–AI Conference & Expo (PDX2027). The vision is to create a sustainable platform where emerging talents and industry innovators can showcase practical AI solutions, strengthen their human capabilities and transform innovative ideas into meaningful business and career opportunities.

1. Penang Welcomes Nationwide Young Innovators

PENANG, 7 November 2026 — A total of 98 participants from 22 universities across Malaysia, representing 41 team and individual entries, participated in AI Future Makers Bootcamp 2026, a nationwide talent development and innovation initiative designed to address real-world industry challenges while nurturing future-ready capabilities. Following four weeks of workshops, mentoring and preliminary pitching, 20 finalist entries advanced to the Grand Final at SEGi College Penang, the Official Venue Sponsor, competing for a total prize pool of RM10,000. YAB Tuan Chow Kon Yeow, Chief Minister of Penang, is scheduled to attend the Prize Presentation Ceremony, where the achievements of the finalists will be recognised. The programme is organised by the Penang Digitalisation–AI Conference & Expo (PDX), co-hosted by Agensi Pekerjaan CKM Sdn Bhd, and led by Ts. Lukas J. Tan, CEO of OPERiON Ecommerce & Software Sdn Bhd. It is also part of PENtastic Startup Month 2026, a wider entrepreneurship and innovation initiative led by Digital Penang, bringing together ecosystem activities to strengthen Penang's startup and digital economy development.

2. Addressing Industry Talent Challenges Through AI

Led by Ts. Lukas J. Tan, Chairman of AI Future Makers Bootcamp 2026, the initiative emerged from industry engagement through PDX, where engineering talent shortages, workforce development challenges and the growing gap between available talent and industry expectations were identified. The competition encourages participants to explore how artificial intelligence can improve the way organisations discover, engage and develop human potential, while addressing practical challenges faced by today's businesses. Beyond technological innovation, AIFM also provides an opportunity to connect expertise across human capital development, education and industry, encouraging knowledge exchange and new approaches to workforce transformation. Lukas, a Professional Technologist registered with the Malaysia Board of Technologists (MBOT), believes that meaningful innovation requires both technological capabilities and a deeper understanding of people and industry needs. "AI can transform how organisations operate, but developing human potential requires experience, collaboration and the right ecosystem. Through AIFM, we hope to bring together different perspectives and expertise to explore practical solutions. As we move towards PDX2027, we look forward to strengthening these connections and creating more opportunities for collaboration between industry professionals, innovators and the wider business community," he said.

3. Preparing Young Talents to Thrive Beyond Technical Skills

As AI becomes increasingly capable of writing software, analysing information, developing applications and automating routine processes, Lukas believes the next generation must develop strengths that extend beyond technical proficiency. While technical knowledge remains important, creativity, critical thinking, leadership, adaptability and the ability to execute ideas are increasingly essential for long-term employability. AI Future Makers therefore welcomed talents from both technical and non-technical disciplines, guiding them through workshops, industry mentoring, collaborative problem-solving and pitching exercises. The judging framework evaluated not only the AI applications but also problem understanding, innovation, business potential, teamwork and presentation capabilities. "If everyone can access the same AI tools, what makes one graduate different from another? We should not prepare our younger generation merely to compete with AI in performing technical tasks. We must develop their inner strengths, confidence and ability to create value. Our objective is not merely to help young talents survive the AI transformation, but to develop the capabilities to grow stronger through it," Lukas explained.

4. Recognising the Courage to Innovate — Even Alone

Among the 60 entries, Lukas was particularly encouraged by participants who chose to compete individually, demonstrating the courage to develop and present their ideas without relying on a team. He believes this willingness to take initiative represents an important quality that should be encouraged among young people, especially when opinions and discussions are often more visible than genuine execution. "Voices are loud, but execution is often limited. Many people have ideas, but fewer are willing to take the first step to make something happen. I was particularly impressed by those who dared to participate alone. They may not have the perfect team or resources, but they were willing to create, learn and demonstrate what they could achieve," Lukas said. He added that not every capable individual receives the same opportunities or recognition, and that talent should not remain hidden simply because someone lacks confidence, connections or visibility. "Do not wait for someone to discover your talent. Be brave enough to propose an idea, demonstrate your abilities and take action. I would rather see an imperfect solution that has been created than a brilliant idea that has never been attempted. That is the spirit of innovation we want to promote through AI Future Makers," he emphasised.5. Strengthening Penang's Industry and Talent Ecosystem

The Final Pitching Day brought together representatives from established corporations, industry organisations and the professional community, providing emerging talents with valuable exposure beyond the academic environment. As part of PENtastic Startup Month 2026, AI Future Makers also contributes to the wider innovation ecosystem led by Digital Penang, bringing together talents, businesses and industry expertise to encourage meaningful collaboration. The programme reflects a shared interest in recognising emerging potential, fostering innovation and strengthening the connection between talent development and industry needs.

Christine Chuah, representing co-host Agensi Pekerjaan CKM Sdn Bhd, highlighted the importance of recognising talent beyond conventional recruitment criteria. "In recruitment, we often see capable individuals whose potential may not be fully reflected in their qualifications or resumes. What employers increasingly value is the ability to communicate, adapt, solve problems and take initiative. AI Future Makers provides an opportunity for emerging talents to demonstrate these qualities through practical innovation. We hope this platform will encourage greater understanding between employers and talents, while helping organisations recognise capabilities that might otherwise go unnoticed," she said.

6. From Caterpillar to Butterfly — Let Your Ideas Shine

Carrying the theme "From Caterpillar to Butterfly — Let Your Ideas Shine", AI Future Makers Bootcamp 2026 represents the transformation of young people as they discover their strengths, develop confidence and learn to turn ideas into practical solutions. The programme celebrates not only its winners, but also the determination, teamwork, resilience and personal growth demonstrated throughout the innovation journey. The organising committee expressed appreciation to Digital Penang for bringing together the wider PENtastic Startup Month ecosystem, SEGi College Penang as the official venue sponsor, and the programme's sponsors, mentors, judges, educational institutions and supporting partners. For Lukas, the strong response to this year's competition has reinforced the potential for AI Future Makers to become a broader innovation platform. "Not everyone will become a champion, and not every idea will succeed on the first attempt. But every individual who dares to step forward and take action has already made meaningful progress.

My message to future talents is simple: Do not wait to be discovered. Dare to innovate, dare to create and dare to demonstrate what you are capable of. We look forward to carrying this spirit into PDX2027, where SMEs and innovators will have opportunities to showcase their AI capabilities and practical solutions. Stay tuned for PDX2027 — the next chapter of AI innovation in Penang," he concluded.
